Super Mario Bros. Theme Added to the Library of Congress

The first video game song in history to be added to the registry.

The Super Mario Bros. theme song is undeniably one of the most well-known video game songs of all time. The iconic tune was recently added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress. The selection has the unique honour of being the first in history to include a video game song in the registry.

Over the last four decades, the legendary track has appeared in numerous Super Mario Bros. games, since being introduced in 1985. The song was written by Koji Kondo, the first music composer hired by Nintendo, and was his first major score. The Japanese composer went on to work on several other Nintendo projects, including the iconic theme for The Legend of Zelda. Kondo continues to work on the Super Mario Bros. series, most recently on the Super Mario Bros. movie.

The Super Mario Bros. theme is ‘probably the most recognisable’ video game song in history, according to the Library of Congress. The theme is one of 25 songs added to the library this year, which also includes Madonna’s ‘Like a Virgin’, Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You,’ Daddy Yankee’s ‘Gasolina’, Queen Latifah’s ‘All Hail the Queen’, Jimmy Buffett’s ‘Margaritaville’, and others.
