Meta Now Building AI Tools and ‘Personas’

The company is developing AI-powered tools for WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated in a post on Monday that Meta now has a team devoted to developing tools with artificial intelligence. In the future, this might also involve additional AI tools across its apps and services, as well as ‘AI personas’ created to assist users in ‘various ways’.

More specifically, Zuckerberg claims that the company is working on AI ‘experiences’ with text, such as Messenger and WhatsApp chat, experiences with images, such as ‘creative Instagram filters and ad formats,’ as well as ‘video and multi-modal experiences.’ According to reports, the new AI team will be led by Ahmad Al-Dahle, Meta’s vice president of AI and machine learning, who previously worked on Apple’s special product group.

Here’s what the post from Zuckerberg read:

We’re creating a new top-level product group at Meta focused on generative AI to turbocharge our work in this area. We’re starting by pulling together a lot of the teams working on generative AI across the company into one group focused on building delightful experiences around this technology into all of our different products. In the short term, we’ll focus on building creative and expressive tools.

Over the longer term, we’ll focus on developing AI personas that can help people in a variety of ways. We’re exploring experiences with text (like chat in WhatsApp and Messenger), with images (like creative Instagram filters and ad formats), and with video and multi-modal experiences. We have a lot of foundational work to do before getting to the really futuristic experiences, but I’m excited about all of the new things we’ll build along the way.

As the popularity of OpenAI’s ChatGPT grows, more companies, including Microsoft, Google, and now Snapchat, are looking into opportunities in the generative AI space. Meta recently announced that it is developing its own AI language generator, LLaMA, aimed at researchers rather than the general public. It also released two AI chatbots, Galactica and Blenderbot, which were not particularly impressive, but it will be interesting to see how Meta improves and incorporates AI features into each of its apps.
