The weathered-look timepiece honours the maritime explorer and novelist.

It’s not often that a diving watch appears in both an adventure story and real-world ocean expeditions, but Doxa’s watches have always been designed a little differently.

Both Clive Cussler, a nautical explorer and novelist, and his renowned fictional hero Dirk Pitt, who travelled land and sea with Doxa timepieces, wore the brand for decades. It’s a powerful double dose of inspiration for the recently released Doxa Sub 300T Clive Cussler watch, which honours Cussler’s career as both a novelist and an explorer of several shipwrecks.

Doxa was inspired by Cussler’s history while redesigning the Sub 300T, ‘which now introduces an artistic and historical look to the series,’ according to the watchmaker. Doxa has a history of creating striking watches that go beyond the surface, such as the recently updated, bold orange Doxa Sub 200 C-Graph II (the orange dial frequently appears in Cussler’s work).

The watch (together with an impressive commemorative display box) was recently introduced at the New York Yacht Club alongside Watches of Switzerland. Dirk Cussler, who was on hand to sign copies of Dirk Pitt’s adventure book ‘The Devil’s Sea‘, praised his father as being ‘bold, creative, and adventurous,’ and added that the watch is a fitting tribute to his legacy.

‘It was how my father approached life. Whether searching for historic shipwrecks or formulating tales of adventure, he was always original and always unique.’

The handcrafted dial on the Clive Cussler watch resembles a classic compass, and the watch, bracelet, pin buckle, and clasp have been antiqued as part of a purposely weathered, rugged design that wouldn’t seem out of place on Dirk Pitt’s wrist.

Dirk Cussler’s birthday is also commemorated on the dial, with numbers 7, 15, and 31 highlighted in red inside the date window. When it comes to deep sea performance, the Clive Cussler watch is definitely no slacker with a water resistance of 1,200 metres (about 4,000 feet).

A watch that rests in the realm of both real-world exploration and impossibly cool tales of adventure is one celebrating, Doxa describes the watch as ‘a reminder of the mysteries that lie beneath the waves and the treasures waiting to be uncovered.’

The Doxa Sub 300T retails for $2,690 USD, and is now available at Doxa or Watches of Switzerland.
