How to Make the Best Dark ‘n Stormy

The Dark ‘n Stormy is an awesome, easy-to-make cocktail that combines dark rum, ginger beer, and lime into a delicious drink. It’s also a lot easier to drink than the name would suggest. It’s a close relative of the Moscow Mule (vodka, ginger beer, lime) and should be a simple transition for vodka drinkers looking to branch out and try something new.

Gosling’s Black Seal Rum, which dates back to 1806, is a rich, flavorful rum from Bermuda. It has caramel, vanilla, and spice overtones, and it’s legally speaking, the only rum that can be used in a Dark ‘n Stormy. The brand owns the drink; in 1991, it successfully registered a trademark stating that any Dark ‘n Stormy prepared using Gosling’s rum must be produced with Gosling’s rum. Other beverage companies have been sued by the corporation for attempting to sell the drink using other rums as the main ingredient. Make it with Gosling’s if you truly want the complete Dark ‘n Stormy experience.

It’s important to note that ginger ale isn’t the same as ginger beer. Ginger ale is just carbonated water with a ginger flavouring, similar to a soda. Ginger beer, on the other hand, is made and fermented (though the term ‘beer’ can be a bit deceptive because most versions are nonalcoholic). Even if you make your Dark ‘n Stormy with ginger ale, you’ll get a good cocktail. The richer flavours and spicy bite of real ginger beer, on the other hand, complement the rich rum.

A small amount of lime juice is added to the rum and ginger beer in many recipes, including this one, to give it a pleasant citrus kick. The lime juice, however, is optional.
