Before we start talking about the DeLorean Alpha5, if you were born before the late nineties, the DeLorean is one of the generation’s most iconic cars for both good and bad reasons. However, it looks like they’re about to rise from the ashes with a brand new, electric car due to be showcased for the first time in August 2022. The DeLorean Alpha5 Electric Car is just as visually striking as we’d expect, complete with doors, and if you’re looking for an electric car, you might want to wait for this one to hit showrooms.
The DeLorean Alpha5 Electric Car is the result of the company’s repositioning as an energy mobility brand, with the human experience at the forefront of everything they do. The Alpha5 EV, designed by renowned design firm Italdesign, incorporates styling cues from the original DMC-12.
The original DeLorean was almost an event due to its reputation, and they hope to replicate that with this brand new release, which will shake up the electric car market and make it much cooler in the process.
Back to the Future
The DeLorean is most famous for being the time machine in the Back to the Future movies, and the futuristic design of the new Alpha5 wouldn’t look totally out of place in a sci-fi film today. DeLorean seems to have a clear vision for the future of their brand and the electric car market, and they recognize that it, like their designs and the vehicles that may come with them, will be constantly evolving.
The DeLorean Alpha5 is an awesome sight to behold from the outside, looking like it was designed for a specific purpose. And just like the DMC-12, the Alpha5 has a commanding presence that will definitely draw well-deserved attention wherever it goes.
The company plans to apply this DNA to all of their vehicles, pushing both their design and performance. If the Alpha5 is any indication, DeLorean is writing their legacy in real-time with designs like this. DeLorean embraces the unexpected, adapting to the future with a curated, counterculture-inspired experience.
Family Issues
To be expected, not everyone is happy with the upcoming release of the Alpha5. While the world debates and/or appreciates the design connection between the new Alpha5 and the original DMC-12, Kat DeLorean Seymour, the late John Z DeLorean’s daughter, has a strong opinion about the new DeLorean vehicle.
In fact, DeLorean Seymour expressed her frustration on Instagram, along with a rendering of a coupe that isn’t the DeLorean Alpha5. The post reads:
@deloreanmotorcompany Is not John DeLorean’s Company. DMC is not 40 years old, and not associated with the DeLorean Family, or my father’s ongoing legacy. Please stop lying and stop speaking about John now, he despised you.
Despite the backlash, DeLorean says they hope to create an environment that encourages human experience and connections with the new release of the stunning DeLorean Alpha5, striking ‘a balance of artificial support and human control’.
The Alpha5 is a clear example of design and craftsmanship that is both intelligent and intuitive. So if you want an electric car and are willing to wait a couple of months, the Alpha5 looks like it’s definitely gonna be worth the wait.
The DeLorean Alpha5 will premiere at the Pebble Beach Concours d ‘Elegance Award ramp in Pebble Beach, California on 18 August 2022, and on the Concept Lawn on 21 August 2022.
