Check Out Cadillac’s New Project GTP Hypercar

This Ride Ain't Your Grandaddy's Caddy

Most people associate Cadillac with the extravagant Escalade SUV, the classic Coupe DeVilles, and perhaps even the all-electric Lyriq SUV.

This fact only adds to the allure of their new Project GTP Hypercar. This is a prototype race car that will compete in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the FIA World Endurance Championship, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Cadillac’s DPi-V.R. has dominated the IMSA Daytona Prototype International (DPi) event, winning three championships and every major endurance race, including the Rolex 24 at Daytona four times in a row from 2017 to 2020, according to Road & Track.

The Project GTP Hypercar will attempt to bring more glory to Cadillac in the Le Mans Daytona Hybrid, the DPi class’ replacement, in 2023. Cadillac will compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time since 2002.

“Competing for the overall win at Le Mans with an iconic American brand like Cadillac is an honour,” said Laura Wontrop Klauser, GM sports car racing program manager. “The entire team is excited to continue building Cadillac’s racing legacy by competing against the very best internationally and in the world’s toughest race.”

Few details are available about the Project GTP Hypercar, but Cadillac’s famous vertical lighting and floating blades, as well as their iconic mosaic shield logo, will be featured in the design.

The combustion engine will be a brand-new 5.5-litre V8. It must have a hybrid transaxle, rev no higher than 10,000 RPM, and sound no louder than 110 decibels, according to regulations. The total output will range between 644 and 697 hp, with Cadillac deciding how much of that comes from the electric motor and how much from the V8.
