Insidious Movie Review

Read Ninja X's movie review for Lin Shaye's "Insidious".

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Movie scares for me are getting harder and harder to come by. So-called scary movies these days are more humorous than frightening. I don’t think it’s intentional but there it is. Well, The drought is over.

Today I went to see the scariest movie I’ve seen in a long time. “Insidious” is a genuinely scary movie. I will say at this point in my review that yes some of the scares are a bit predictable but that doesn’t take away from the film in any way.

It’s a basic haunted house movie with a twist. A family moves into their new home and soon strange things begin to happen. It begins when the couple’s youngest son has an accident in the attic. He is not really hurt but soon goes into an unexplainable coma. It is at this point that the haunting begins. Things get moved around, weird noises in the dark, the usual. *SPOILER ALERT* If you haven’t seen the trailer look away. It turns out the house isn’t haunted, the child is.

In desperation, a psychic played by film veteran Lin Shaye is brought in to help save the boy. The “ BOO!” moments in this film for the most part are predictable, but you will jump just the same. They are that well done.

The movie was done by the team that gave us the Saw series. The screenplay was written by Leigh Whannel who also has a small role in the film, and the film was directed by James Wan. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It’s at least as good as the original Amityville horror. It’s creepy without trying to be creepy. Well, it IS trying to be creepy. That’s the whole point of a scary movie. What I mean is it doesn’t hit you over the head with it. The only minus I have is the ending. Without giving anything away, I saw the end a mile away, but I still recommend the film.
