Spotify Launches Their New AI DJ

It's like having a radio show made just for you.

Are you ready for a whole new way to listen to Spotify and connect with your favourite artists? Enter Spotify’s DJ, an AI DJ in your pocket that reimagines how users listen on Spotify. DJ is a personalised AI guide who knows you and your music preferences so well that it can choose what to play for you, taking personalisation to a new level.

DJ, first rolling out in beta, will deliver a curated playlist of music along with commentary on the tracks and artists it thinks you’ll enjoy in a stunningly realistic voice. If you don’t like it, simply tap the DJ button to switch it up. The more you listen and tell the DJ what you like (and don’t like), the more accurate the DJ’s recommendations will become.

Spotify AI DJ

DJ combines Spotify’s personalisation technology with OpenAI technology, sorting through the latest music and revisiting some of your old favourites, possibly resurfacing a song you haven’t heard in years. It will then analyse your preferences and deliver a playlist of songs tailored specifically to you, with the lineup constantly updated based on your feedback. DJ also provides users with interesting information about the music, artists, or genres they are listening to.

Xavier ‘X’ Jernigan

Spotify has partnered with Xavier ‘X’ Jernigan, one of the hosts of Spotify’s first morning show, The Get Up, to create the DJ. His voice is the first model for the DJ, and Spotify promises to iterate and innovate the model in the future.

Where to find the DJ

  1. Go to your Music Feed on Home in the Spotify mobile app for iOS or Android.
  2. Tap Play on the DJ card.
  3. Spotify will handle the rest! The DJ will play a selection of music for you, along with a brief commentary on the songs and artists.
  4. If you’re not feeling it, just press the DJ button in the bottom right corner of the screen to switch to a different genre, artist, or mood.

The DJ is now available in English starting today for Spotify Premium users in the U.S. and Canada. What do you think of Spotify’s AI DJ? Let us know in the comments, on Facebook, or on Twitter.
