Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently talked about Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine making a comeback in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine movie. in an interview with DiscussingFilm. He mentioned, seemingly to the surprise of fans, how it would open an opportunity for Chris Evans’s Captain America or maybe Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man to return to the MCU.
Commenting on Downey and Evans’ return, Feige said, ‘That’s the key, right? How do you do it in a way that maintains what has come before, and in a great way? And we’ve been spending, you know, the last two-plus years figuring that out for Wolverine. So, what’s to come? We’ll see. We’re just proud that we, I think, have figured it out for Wolverine. I think Hugh’s appearance and starring role in [Deadpool & Wolverine] is a great sign that it can be done — if great care is taken.’
Following the events of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, in which Iron Man met his end, Downey and Evans both left the franchise. Likewise, the death of Wolverine was depicted on screen in 2017’s ‘Logan’ and is now brought back in the Deadpool universe. Feige said in a previous Vanity Fair interview that he didn’t want to mess with Downey’s leave from Avengers: Endgame, unlike what’s happening with Logan.
This multiverse crap is starting to take away from the emotional impact of a character’s death, and Marvel is trying hard to be the frontman of this garbage, likely because of their constant box office flops over the past few years. Just let people STAY dead. Geez. Moviegoers know a cash grab attempt when they see one, and no matter HOW much you try, you’re not going to re-create the magic of the old Marvel Studios films just by having Iron Man return to the MCU.
It remains to be seen whether any of this holds true in the future (we’re really hoping it doesn’t). Deadpool & Wolverine hits in cinemas on 26 July 2024.
