Saint Seiya is FINALLY getting a live-action adaptation. Sony Pictures has dropped the trailer for the live-action adaptation of Knights of the Zodiac, based on Masami Kurumada‘s UBER-popular manga series ‘Saint Seiya’. You can check out the trailer below:
Mackenyu plays Seiya, a ‘headstrong street teen, who spends his time fighting for cash, while he searches for his abducted sister,’ according to the official plot synopsis. Seiya is thrown into a world of warring saints, ancient mystical training, and a reincarnated goddess who needs his protection, after one of his fights taps into powers he never knew he possessed.
From the anime series to the 3D animated version, the Knights of the Zodiac franchise has gone through many iterations. The series tells the stories of copper knights known as ‘Saints‘, each in possession of a ‘cloth’ guarded by a different constellation, who risk their lives to protect a girl named Saori Kido, the reincarnation of the goddess Athena, she attempts to keep the Earth from being destroyed by evil forces.
Madison Iseman plays Sienna [Saori in the anime], while Sean Bean plays Alman Kido [Mitsumasa Kido in the anime], the man who recruits Seiya and puts him to the ultimate test to take his rightful place as a Knight of the Zodiac. X-Men alum Famke Janssen plays Guraad [likely a gender-swapped version of the anime’s Vander Graad], the leader of a secret organisation that believes a false prophecy of Saori becoming an evil version of Athena.
The film is directed by Tomek Baginski from a screenplay by Josh Campbell, Matt Stuecken, and Kiel Murray. If you watch Netflix, you may be familiar with Baginski because he’s an Executive Producer on The Witcher, The Witcher: Blood Origins, and The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.
We’ve been waiting for this since 1986, and absolutely can’t wait to check it out. Knights of the Zodiac hits cinemas on 12 May 2023.
