In Marvel Studios’ upcoming Daredevil: Born Again, coming to Disney+, Jon Bernthal will return to his most punishing role as antihero and former US Marine Frank Castle, aka The Punisher.
Jon Bernthal will star in the 18-episode series, which will begin filming in New York this month, alongside Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio. While ‘Born Again’ refers to the epic 1986 Daredevil story arc written by Frank Miller and drawn by David Mazzuchelli, the show deviates from that plot, though how much is unclear. The main focus, however, remains Daredevil vs Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin.
Born Again is the follow-up to Daredevil, which aired on Netflix for three seasons between 2013 and 2018. Besides Daredevil and The Punisher, Netflix has cancelled several Marvel shows, including Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, ahead of the late 2019 launch of competing streaming service Disney+. However, Marvel CEO Kevin Feige was said to believe that the Netflix characters were still in the works, and by the end of the year, Cox had a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home and later appeared in She-Hulk.
Whether or not other Daredevil actors will return for Daredevil: Born Again is unconfirmed. Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson, who played original Daredevil supporting characters Karen Page and Foggy Nelson, aren’t expected to return to the Netflix series, and it’s unclear whether their roles will be recast or dropped entirely.
However, other characters from The Defenders may appear in the new Disney+ series. For a while now, Krysten Ritter and Mike Colter have been hinting at a possible MCU return as Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, but nothing has been confirmed. It wouldn’t be a total surprise if they made an appearance, but fingers crossed in any case. Hopefully, photos (or better yet, a trailer) from Daredevil: Born Again will give a first look at Bernthal’s Punisher return soon.
