There is a lot of new TV series and movies coming to Netflix in May 2020, but very few shows have a following like Avatar: The Last Airbender. So if you never had a chance to watch the series when it was on the air, or you’re just looking for a way to watch it again, The Last Airbender is now available for streaming.
If you’re a fan of Kung-fu movies, you most certainly won’t be disappointed. But if you’re not totally convinced if the show is for you? Here’s what the show is about. The Last Airbender takes place in a fictional east Asia-like setting, in which people can learn the art of ‘bending’ that allows them to control one of the four elements: fire, water, earth, and air. The Avatar is a special individual who can learn to control all four, reincarnating over and over as a protector of the world. At the start of the series, siblings Sokka and Katara discover the latest Avatar, a young airbender named Aang who is the last of his kind, and agree to travel with him as he learns to control the other three elements so that he’ll be strong enough to stop the war-like Fire Nation from taking over the world.
Premiering in February 2005, Avatar: The Last Airbender ran for three seasons, ultimately concluding in July 2008. In 2010, M. Night Shyamalan attempted (keyword ATTTEMPTED) to reimagine the show in a god-awful live-action movie called ‘The Last Airbender’, because James Cameron was already using the name Avatar. Seriously, DO NOT bother with even watching the Shyamalan version. It’s also currently available on Netflix, but consider yourself warned. The Avatar universe also got a fantastic sequel back in 2012 called ‘The Legend of Korra’.
Netflix announced a live-action remake of The Last Airbender back in September 2018, with Avatar: The Last Airbender executive producers Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko signing on to be the executive producers and showrunners for the new live-action remake, assuring fans that they won’t make the same mistakes as the movie. Production was set to start in 2019.
