Lionel Messi, captain of the Argentina national team and the 2022 World Cup champion, has set the record for the most popular Instagram post ever.

After 67 million fans double-tapped their screens, the highest-paid athlete in the world (according to Forbes May 2022 rating) posted a series of celebratory photos, starting with one of the Argentine football star raising his Cup trophy — that easily shattered the record for the most liked post on the social media platform.

A photo of an egg that was specifically posted to break Instagram’s ‘like’ record in 2019 held the previous record. It peaked at just over 57.6 million, breaking Kendal Jenner’s 2018 picture of her daughter Stormi, which had 18 million likes at the time.

With his team’s victory over France in the World Cup final on Sunday, Messi broke a number of other records as well.

Lionel Messi also holds the record for the Most World Cup Games Played (26), the most Man of the Match honours (11), the most World Cup Appearances as Captain (19), and the most World Cup Appearances by a Male Player (5), all according to Guinness World Records.

In a recent ranking of the platform’s highest-paid users, Lionel Messi came in second place to football rival Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi might be able to break that record in 2023 since he now has the most-liked post on the planet.
