According to a message from director Hwang Dong-hyuk on Twitter, Squid Game season two is officially coming to Netflix. Squid Game has been renewed for a second season on Netflix. The message states that Gi-hun and the mysterious Front Man will return in the Squid Game season two. In addition, the note mentions ‘the man in the suit with ddakji might be back,’ and that we”ll also get introduced to Cheol-su, Young-hee’s boyfriend.
‘It took 12 years to bring the first season of “Squid Game” to life last year. But it took 12 days for “Squid Game” to become the most popular Netflix series ever,’ Hwang writes. ‘As the writer, director, and producer of “Squid Game,” a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show… Join us once more for a whole new round.’
Despite the fact that Netflix’s fortunes have changed since the show first aired, the show has been renewed. Even with the worldwide success of Squid Game, Netflix reported its first drop in subscribers in ten years in April. Layoffs and a reported tightening of production budgets practically across the board followed quickly. Netflix is also focusing on limiting password sharing, and has informed employees that ad-supported streaming will be released by the end of the year.
At the time of its release, the Korean series was the most popular on Netflix. Last year, Hwang noted that he was “planning process” of Squid Game season two, while Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos stated that “the Squid Game universe has just begun.”
Squid Game season two has yet to be announced, and it’s unclear when it will air — or even if it’s even finished yet. Hwang told Vanity Fair in an interview that the next season of Squid Game will be released by the end of 2023 or 2024, and will feature more diabolical games. So, if you want to see what Gi-hun gets up to next, you’re gonna have to wait a bit. But what’s a couple of years, right?
