May 4th is once again upon us, which means it’s time to celebrate all things Star Wars. May 4th is Star Wars Day, a day for fans of the beloved space opera franchise to come together and celebrate all things Star Wars.
If you didn’t already know, the (still) unofficial holiday was inspired by a pun on the phrase ‘May the Force be with you,’ which is frequently heard in Star Wars films.
The pun first appeared in The London Evening News on 4 May 1979, in an advertisement placed by the Conservative Party of the United Kingdom to celebrate the newly elected Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. ‘May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie,’ read the advertisement. ‘Congratulations.’
Over the years, a lot of people incorrectly thought the Star Wars Day phrase came from the release date of the first Star Wars film, ‘A New Hope’, but the film premiered on 25 May 1977, not the fourth. If this comes up in a trivia game and you get it right, we want credit.
Anyway, no matter how you choose to celebrate, whether with mates, family, or fellow Jedi, May 4th is a great day to be a Star Wars fan. So from all of us here at Chulo Magazine, Happy Star Wars Day, May the 4th be with you, and may the Force be with us all!
