With an awesome combination of action, comedy, horror and general weirdness, like we said back in January, think The Bourne Identity meets The Mummy meets 12 Monkeys — it’s pretty fair to say that there is a LOT going on in Disney’s Plus’ new series, Moon Knight.
Oscar Isaac makes his MCU debut as Steven Grant, a bookish man who epitomizes the definition of milquetoast. Grant is a modest museum gift shop employee in London, who enjoys talking about Egyptian history, which sadly isn’t part of his profession. He’s a pretty regular guy by day, although he also believes he has a sleep disorder. As a result, he tapes his door (which is locked with several deadbolts and chains) and shackles himself to a bed surrounded by sand, all in the hopes of preventing his unconscious body from going away at night or at least letting him know if he tried.
Unfortunately, Steven’s life is about to become a little more complicated.
A ruthless mercenary and a bizarre cult come crashing into Steven’s life, as one morning, he wakes up to find himself in the mountains of Europe with a dislocated jaw — in the middle of a shootout. Suddenly Steven’s knowledge of Egyptian mythology comes to life as he finds himself embroiled in a war between ancient gods. Turns out that Steven has dissociative identity disorder, whose alternate, called Marc Spector, is a former Marine and CIA agent, done gone and pissed off cult leader Dr Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke), who was a minor character in the comics but appears to be taking on new significance in the MCU series.
With episode one streaming on Disney Plus now, and new episodes following each Wednesday, Moon Knight is mind-bending enough to keep your attention, and upcoming episodes should continue to be wildly entertaining, whilst totally eclipsing expectations.
