Leave reality at the door and come with me on a little trip to the old west with a twist. Our west is being invaded by aliens. That’s the premise of a new movie called, appropriately enough, Cowboys and Aliens.
The film stars Daniel Craig (Casino Royale) as a mysterious stranger who wakes up in the middle of the desert with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He’s wearing nothing but his long johns and a strange metal bracelet.
After arriving in town, we find out he’s a wanted man named Lonergan. He is captured and is about to be sent to the U.S. Marshal when the aliens show up. The bracelet lights up and waddaya know! It”s a weapon! The mystery deepens. How did he get it? As the movie progresses we find answers to this question and more. The aliens begin taking the townspeople away and Lonergan teams up with Colonel Dollarhyde (Harrison Ford) to get them back.
Don’t get me wrong. I kinda like this movie but I don’t put it on my must-see list. I mean really. In the real world, how long do you think cowboys with six-shooters would last against aliens and their high-tech weaponry? It would be a VERY short movie. But that being said, as far as pure escapism, this is a pretty good movie. It won’t win any awards but it will help you get away for couple of hours.
Our heroes eventually find the aliens and we find out why they’re here. It’s a really dumb reason. I won’t tell you what it is, but you won’t like it.
Long story short, as far as summer movies go, Cowboys and Aliens is not one of the best, but it’ll do.
