It’s been a long time since Scott Pilgrim challenged the world on the big screen in 2010s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and now it looks like another story by Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O’Malley is getting adapted. Actress Blake Lively will be making her directorial debut in the upcoming adaptation of O’Malley’s graphic novel, Seconds.
Seconds tells the story of Katie Clay, the head chef of the restaurant the graphic novel is named after. One night, she meets Lis, a young girl who offers her the opportunity to ‘re-do’ parts of her past. Katie begins to change her life for the better with the help of a magical notebook and a mushroom-filled cubbyhole. However, there are rules that come with these changes that Katie ignores, which causes her life to spiral out of control.
While Seconds will be Lively’s cinematic directorial debut, she made her directing debut last year with Taylor Swift’s video for I Bet You Think About Me. Lively was nominated for directing and producing at the 2022 Academy of Country Music Awards for the video.
Seconds isn’t the only adaptation that O’Malley has in the works. The creator is working on an anime adaptation of Scott Pilgrim for Netflix. O’Malley is writing and executive producing the project, along with the ‘Are You Afraid of the Dark? reboot showrunner BenDavid Grabinski.
If the project is greenlit, Science SARU, the studio behind Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, Devilman Crybaby, and the T0-B1 and Akariki shorts from Star Wars: Visions, will be handling the animation. Hopefully, the project will avoid the cancellations that have plagued Netflix’s animation lineup.
Seconds is being made by Searchlight Pictures, with Edgar Wright producing and penning the script. The project also includes Marc Platt, the producer of Wicked, Cruella, and Dear Evan Hansen.
