The North American cinematic release date for Legend of the White Dragon, starring Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers icon Jason David Frank in his final film, has been officially announced by Bat in the Sun and Bascule Productions.
The release date has been set for Labor Day weekend 2023, according to Deadline. The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers actor tragically died in November 2022, and the film’s release coincides with what would have been his fiftieth birthday.
Legend of the White Dragon, directed by Aaron and Sean Schoenke, stars Frank as Erik Reed, better known as the titular hero who lives in a world not dissimilar to Frank’s Power Rangers roots. After years of hiding, Reed is forced to clear his name. Aaron Schoenke co-stars as the villainous Dragon Prime, an enigmatic antagonist whose own plot threatens Reed’s heroics.
‘We are proud to have worked with such a talented actor, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share his final performance with the world,’ said Aaron Schoenke of working with Frank. ‘Having been on this journey with Jason for ten years, I know he would be beyond excited to know that Legend of the White Dragon will be opening in theatres.’
Sean Schoenke added, ‘Despite the tremendous loss, the production team has worked tirelessly to complete the film and ensure that it meets the high standards that Jason set for himself. The result is a powerful and moving tribute to his talent and dedication.’
Frank made his debut as Tommy Oliver in the 1993 multi-part episode ‘Green With Evil‘ of the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. Before breaking the curse and joining the heroes in their fight against evil, Tommy first appeared as Rita Repulsa‘s Green Ranger. This would kick off the longest-running Power Rangers legacy, encompassing not only his original Green to White Ranger transformation but also those of the Red Zeo, Red Turbo, and Black Dino Rangers.
Legend of the White Dragon arrives in select cinemas across North America on 1 September 2023.
