Bioware’s New Sexy Liara Figurine Angers Fans

Bioware's New Sexy Figurine Angers Fans.
6 September 2011

Last Saturday, BioWare released pictures on their Mass Effect 2 Facebook page of a new ‘Bishoujo’ Liara T’Soni figurine created by Japanese figurine maker Kotobukiya and reading the comments, the majority of fans aren’t pleased.

For those of you not familiar with the company, Kotobukiya is a big-time producer of these figures, and currently, they have a line of figures called ‘Bishoujo Statues’ that feature popular Marvel, DC, and various other famous female characters. These figures are based on the artwork of famous Japanese illustrator Shunya Yamashita. You can check out the Liara figurine design below:

The design of the popular Mass Effect character really hasn’t been well-received received by its Facebook community, mainly due to the ‘over-sexualisation’ of a character known for not flaunting her assets at all in the game. Some of the [unhappy] comments include:

I think one of Liara’s best features was being feminine and strong without being over-sexualized. This just… Ruins her image for me.

Really? Really, BioWare? I thought we were trying to step *away* from sexism.

Liara is supposed to be classy and modest, and this is neither.

Absolutely bad form. Is this how strong female characters are meant to be seen?

Face is awful, chest is ridiculous. Barely resembles her physically, and does nothing to capture the spirit of the character.

We could go on and on, but there are over 2,000 comments to pick from, and you can see how upset the fans are about the Liara figurine. The page states that their comments will be used in helping to shape the final product, but given the response, is it something that will have to go back to the drawing board completely?

Figures like this are not made for you complaining, sissy fanboys that couldn’t get a girl if you PAID her, and they DEFINITELY not made for girls/women at all. Come on, really? Have you people EVER seen a Japanese cartoon, sculpture or video game? You are all entitled to your opinions, but in this case, we have to say, STFU.

But our ranting aside, what is your take on the Liara figurine? Do you agree with the Facebook comments made so far or is it something that can be added to your collection? Let us know on Twitter.

BioWare, if you’re listening, PLEASE keep the figure the way that it is.
