On 24th August 2012, South Korean pop group 2NE1 became the first girl group to rank on Billboard‘s “Current Box Score“. The group, which includes members Chae-rin “CL” Lee , Gong “Minzy” Min-ji, Sandara “Dara” Park, and Park “Bom” Bom, recently held an independent concert at the Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre on August 24, 2012. Tickets sales brought in $653,716, ranking at #29 on Billboard’s Current Box Score.
Box Score receives information from promoters all over the world and assesses ticket sales and audience members for all performances put on over the past three months. Until now, SMTOWN and Lim Jae Bum were the only other Korean artists to have their names listed on the chart.
For those of you who haven’t heard of 2NE1, here’s some info for you:
2NE1 first appeared in back in 2009, in a commercial campaign for LG Electronics called “Lollipop“, along with fellow K-Pop group Big Bang. The song became a huge-hit in South Korea, selling over three million downloads. The group followed this success with their debut single “Fire“, also released in 2009. Since then, the group has released two EP’s, 2NE1 and 2NE1 2nd Mini Album. From the first EP came the hit single “I Don’t Care“, which won the group a “Song of the Year” award at the 2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards. Their follow-up singles, “Go Away“, “Lonely” and “I Am The Best” were all successful as well, with “I Am the Best” winning 2NE1 their second “Song of the Year” award in 2011.
As of this writing, the ladies of 2NE1 are currently touring in Japan. The girls started their 2012 tour with a three-day concert in Osaka, Japan from 31st August to 2nd September at Osaka Castle Hall, where over 36,000 fans gathered to see them perform. The girls will go on to perform at Nagoya Nippon Gaishi Hall on 7th and 8th September, at the Yokohama Arena on 11th and 12th September, and at the Saitama Super Arena on 29th and 30th September.
