We like when we’re surprised by a music submission. And northern California native Jori King did just that. This 21 year-old singer/songwriter already has songs on iTunes, and we think that the video for his newest single “Breakfast in Bed” is awesome. Directed by Jonathan Andrade of BLKDMNDS, the video was impressive, featuring an even more impressive song. Jori recently performed at a benefit for the Foster Youth on July 7th, 2012.

We were happy to talk to Jori, and find out where he and his music are headed.

Where are you from? How was life growing up?
Born in Vallejo, CA and was raised in Sacramento. Life was – Interesting. (laughs) Not too hard but I’ve seen enough, trust me.

What’s your nationality?
Black, white and Native American, among other things! (laughs)

What is your music background?
Nothing really; I put out my first song “Love At First Sight back in 2010. Before then, I wasn’t really doing music – Didn’t really know I could sing.

All of your songs are absolutely awesome! “Promise” and “Fatal Love” are two of our favorites. Do you usually write your own songs?
Definitely! Usually I get some beats, see what I like and let the rest come on it’s own! I spend a lot of time writing on the go, in my car and sometimes in the bathroom. (laughs)

“Breakfast in Bed” is a great song, with an even more interesting title. What made you come up with it?
My mom posted something about Breakfast In Bed on my Facebook and I thought, “That’d be a dope concept.” (laughs)

Speaking of “Breakfast in Bed”, the girl in the video made us hungry. Who is she?
Her name is Jennifer Jayleen. Funny girl.

Who directed the video?
Jonathan Andrade of BLKDMNDS directed the video.

Who produces your songs?
A number of different producers from all over. Malcy P, Rob-E, Guy Furious, Clyde Strokes and more!

What are your songs usually about?
Usually about something happy but I’m branching out a bit more these days.

Who are your musical influences?
Writers like The-Dream, Ne-Yo, Sean Garrett and others.

Why do you want to record and release your own music?
I enjoy making music other people can enjoy and relate too. It’s very fulfilling.

Who do you think your fans are?
Lots of people from all over! I’ve been surprised sometimes to find out where people are from!

How does your family feel about your music career? Are they pretty supportive?
My mother is very proud and loves to brag. My dad is dead to me.

What are your music career goals, in the next 1 to 3 years?
Basically I’d like to build a foundation and support system that will allow me to flourish.

How would you define the word “success”?
Being happy with the decisions and choices you make in life. Being proud about the path you took when looking back. That’s success in my opinion.

What live performance experience have you had? Any industry showcases?
This year will be the first year I am really pursuing things as an artist. Rather than a songwriter. Anything before this is really not worth noting.

How do you rate your live performance ability?
B minus. Looking forward to improving.

Have you previously recorded any previous CD’s?
Nope! My debut EP/Album will be released soon for free and on iTunes!

Speaking of freebies, the majority of your songs are all free downloads from what we can tell. Why is that?
I’m not all about the Benjamin’s. I’d like people to accept and appreciate my music and myself as an artist before expecting people to buy. I’d like to create the demand first.

When are you planning to sell your music?
You can grab Breakfast In Bed right now on iTunes!

Have you affiliated with a performance rights organization?
I register my songs under BMI; but I am not under any label. I am unsigned.

Have you made any industry connections yet? Who?
Yes! I’ve worked with a number of people from Atlantic Records, Epic Records (Sony), Belugia Heights (Warner), top producers and writers (as a songwriter). It’s been a wonderful experience so far but now it’s ME time!

Are there any musicians in the industry that you’d like to work with?
I’m down to work with a number of people. The-Dream is a dope writer.

Have you had any print or broadcast exposure?
Well I’ve been featured on a number of popular blog sites like DJBooth.Net, MzHipHop.Me, Currenthiphop.com and obviously my new video with BLKDMNDS. I’m sure there is more to come!
